4th Record Club: 24th May

Hello, hello! The May record club will be back to normal, instead of a show and tell of recent purchases, so get digging through your collections. It'll be at Shop and nominations for records are open now! I did think about using some kind of alternative voting system, but it's Record Club not Politics Club. Leave a comment below to nominate a record, feel free to try and garner votes with as much heartfelt prose as possible, or send us a message via @record_club. Nominations close on the 16th May, and there'll be a week to vote for the winner.

What will win the prestigious election? There are lots of good gigs this month, maybe that'll sway votes? There's also the Endtroducing issue...

Previous winners: Marquee Moon:Television, Magic Chairs:Efterklang, Hunky Dory:David Bowie, Endtroducing:DJ Shadow (though Songs About Fucking by Big Black got played, due to illness).

The drama! The excitement! The second Bristol Record Club!

So, March's record club happened, but not without a minor hiccup. The winning records were Bowie's Hunky Dory and DJ Shadow's Endtroducing. About an hour before kick off I got a call from Mark who'd nominated Shadow's masterpiece saying he couldn't make it due to vomiting child and wife. It was tough but I've forgiven him. So, we were stuck for our second place record - oh noes!

A quick tweet and a text later and the two third place records were lined up for a live, on the night vote (oh the excitement!).

Bowie went down really well. Chloe gave a nice introduction, without mentioning Labyrinth and every one seemed really into it. I got the feeling a lot of people who had listened to Bowie a lot heard it with fresh ears, and a lot of people who didn't know the record so well heard something that they might want to add to the collection.

After a quick Happy Birthday track (thank you Paul McCartney) for Brett we had the show down between the two third place records. The runners up were Genesis' Lamb Lies Down on Broadway and Big Black's Songs About Fucking. Both nominators (Lori and Rich respectively) got a chance to introduce their records and beg for votes. I forget how many each record got, though I do remember there were a few abstentions, but the winner was the aggressive almost industrial Songs About Fucking. I think people appreciated it, even if they didn't enjoy it (the cover of The Model got peoples toes tapping) but it certainly split the room roughly along gender lines.

The SHOP! people have written up a nice review and we've agreed on when the next one will be (19th April - 3 days after Record Store Day). More information about that one to follow. If you came and have blogged about it or whatever leave a comment and I'll add your blog to the site.

One thing Lori sort of mentioned is that maybe we should arrange some kind of swap shop for records that you have duplicates of - what do people think? There was also a sort of agreement that Endtroducing gets a free pass for the next normal night (in May, ooh, does that mean the April one will be special some how???), how does that play with people?

Last but by no means east, if you want to blog on the site about the records that get played let me know and I'll add you as an editor - I'd like for this to be a community thing for everyone that comes to the nights.

April Record Club: 19th April in honour of Record Store Day

So, to celebrate Record Store Day we decided to have a subtle twist on the record club format. The twist is that there will be no nominations or voting round for the 19th of April's club, that the records you bring must have been bought on Record Store Day and you have to have the receipt to prove it! There'll still be a vote for the two LP's to be played in their entirety, as well as nibbles and other nourishments (apparently we need to eat more - the Shop! people get sore teeth the day after we're there).

Feel free to bring singles and EP's you've bought and we'll try to play as many as we can around the two winning LP's in the time. Lets really revel in the wonder of vinyl and the fine independent record stores that sell it! See you on the 19th, or maybe doing some crate digging on the 16th!

Normal service will resume in May.

Voting for March open!

The voting for March's record club is open and the event is up on Facebook

To help sway your vote the people nominating records have written a little blurb about why they nominated what they nominated on this blog page. Do you vote for the story or the music? Decisions, decisions....

The evening will start about 7:30 at SHOP, with the first record spinning up (hopefully at the right speed) at 8pm. Bring nibbles and other refreshments (aka biscuits and booze).

Don't forget, it is your civic musical duty to vote!

March Record Club

The next Record club will be on 22nd March, at the lovely Shop called Shop. We'll run it in the same X-Factor-esque style; nominations close on the 14th, voting up to the 21st. If your record wins you get to introduce it, if we have a tie (like we did this month) we'll do a quick vote on the evening (and maybe a few tracks from the runners up). The one change we're going to make is to ask people making nominations to provide a short bit of text as to why they want the record played. You can still nominate records via @record_club on twitter (if you can explain yourself in 128 chars or less...) or if you want to ramble on a bit longer you can leave a comment on this post.

I'll write another post on how the first one went (very well, thanks!) over the weekend, so this is just a quick thank you to everyone who came, brought records and snacks. I think the Shop people are still eating their way through a small mountain of biscuits...

Voting open for Feburary!

The vote is open on Doodle please only vote for ONE record, but feel free to vote for the record you've nominated. If you're going to come, but haven't nominated anything (or don't want to vote) let us know through the Facebook event page.

The evening will start about 7:30 at SHOP, with the first record spinning up (hopefully at the right speed) at 8pm. Bring nibbles and other refreshments!
